New Features in openMDM 4.3
The new 4.3 version of openMDM includes many interesting improvements.
Version 4.3 of openMDM is now available with important new developments. The main differences in openMDM 4.3 are the improved system configuration and a host of new functions to make the user’s life easier.
With more flexibility and less susceptibility to errors, using the new components applies the OMG guidelines of the CORBA Component Model more consistently. Thus, the interaction of the components has been improved and the system configuration simplified, whereas, in Version 4.2.2, standardisation by an individual configuration was less global and could therefore create problems.
Also, importance has been placed on outward compatibility in openMDM 4.3. New components work effortlessly together with existing ones. Earlier interfaces will still be available and can be used without modification.
The possibility has been provided also in the new version to test interoperability with various CORBA products. This means that it is now easier for developers to check whether the way they like operating CORBA works with openMDM.
File transfer has been improved noticeably. Whereas SUN ORB was used in earlier versions, openMDM 4.3 now operates with JACORB which enables fast, direct transfer of data and dispenses with sockets for rapid file transfer. One benefit of direct transfer is that it can be encrypted with no added cost.
The new event management represents a significant improvement. Events are propagated in the system and components can react to them instantly. Before, it had been necessary to make a specific enquiry about new events.
Internationalisation, which had not been resolved satisfactorily in the old system, has been extended significantly. It is now possible to format data, times and numbers by country by using ISO country codes, and, additionally, all predefined texts and designations can be translated.
There have also been a few developments with regard to user comfort.
The new Menu Manager enables changes to be made freely to the menu structure. Components can themselves determine at which position their menu entries should appear.
The icons of the individual lines can now be modified in the Navigator. For each entry, up to eight different icons (decorators) can be defined which can be used, for example, to indicate status information. The user can also see at a glance the current status of individual objects.
Templates can now be grouped and arranged hierarchically. This reduces the time and effort required in searching for individual files.
openMDM 4.3 can be used on platforms with 64 bit Linux, and on 32 bit Windows XP and Windows Vista. Linux was tested with RHEL Versions 4 and 5.
