Frequently Asked Questions

General

The name “openMDM” indicates the open or public part of the measurement data management system “MDM” developed by Audi (see “The History of openMDM”).

openMDM systems are independent of manufacturer and are unique due to the universal disclosure of the interfaces. The openMDM community as an open source organisation forms a unique exchange and collaboration platform for service organisations and users.

openMDM is used in several member companies with multiple systems agencies. The types of application range from the management and evaluation of laboratory results for lubricant analyses to operational stability analyses right through to test documentation of safety-related driver assistance systems.

No. openMDM is flexibly adaptable and can be usefully employed in all areas of test and measurement data documentation.

Yes. openMDM is a component-based systems building block and can be expanded at any time by adding new or in-house components.

Yes! openMDM supports I18N (internationalization). You can provide all texts and labels in your preferred language.

Legal

Yes. You can use openMDM in your company for your own purposes. However, you are allowed to pass on and sell openMDM only in accordance with the provisions contained in the user agreement.

You can use openMDM without charge within the terms of the user agreement. Licensing costs may arise from the use of ASAM ODS and database servers.

Yes, you are allowed to use the openMDM logo as long as you use openMDM in accordance with the conditions of use. In using the logo, the image of openMDM must not be damaged.

You can use openMDM without charge within the terms of the user agreement. The authorship of software remains unaffected by the activity of the openMDM community.

Performance / Reliability

openMDM can handle both small as well as large amounts of data with consummate ease. openMDM is used successfully in systems which manage quantities of data of the order of more than a hundred terabytes.

The performance of openMDM systems depends on several factors, such as the efficiency of the infrastructure and the system configuration coupled with the specifics of the particular application case. openMDM, as a distributed component system, can be configured for the applications in question and, as a result, offers a unique degree of openness to optimise performance.

Yes. Both computational and memory capacities can be expanded.

Yes. Access to the system, data transfer between distributed components and storage can be secured as required for each configuration.

Support

Yes, there are several companies that offer services concerning openMDM, and they will be happy to help you! You will find them under Members of the openMDM community.

The following members provide services regarding openMDM-support and development (alphabetical order):

Technical / Development

The members of the openMDM community.

Yes. The most important are ASAM ODS, CORBA and OSGI.

Further developments of openMDM will depend on the initiative of the openMDM community.

The openMDM community members undertake development projects on components. They may choose to release information on these projects to the openMDM community.

Yes. openMDM is based on open, standardised and robust interfaces.

All openMDM systems currently operating are based on Oracle. However, due to the layered pattern of openMDM, it is possible to exchange complete layers.
